The Kano State Police Command has arrested 27 individuals in connection with a violent mob attack on the Rano Divisional Police Headquarters, which resulted in the death of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and significant property damage.

The violence erupted late on Sunday, 25 May 2025, after the arrest of a local motorcycle mechanic, Abdullahi Musa, who was taken into custody following complaints of reckless and dangerous riding. Police said Musa was suspected to be under the influence of substances at the time of his arrest.

Shortly after his detention, Musa reportedly showed signs of weakness and was rushed to Rano General Hospital, where he died in the early hours of Monday, 26 May, while receiving treatment.

In response, a group of individuals stormed the Rano Police Division, setting part of the station ablaze, burning two police vehicles, damaging ten others, and attacking officers. The DPO sustained severe injuries in the assault and later died at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

Police spokesperson SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa confirmed that 27 suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack and are currently being investigated. “The situation has been brought under control, and calm has been restored,” he said.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, PhD, visited the scene and assured the public of a full investigation into the root causes of both the initial arrest and the subsequent violence. He also paid a condolence visit to the Emir of Rano, His Highness Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Isah Umar.

The Command appealed to residents to remain peaceful and avoid acts of retaliation, urging full cooperation with law enforcement during the ongoing investigation.

“The Command is committed to ensuring justice for all parties involved and to upholding law and order across the state,” the statement read.
