At least seven people have been confirmed dead following a canoe accident in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The incident was confirmed by the Public Relations Officer of the State Ministry of Finance, Sirajo Gada. He stated that the victims were traveling from Gidan Husaini to Gwargawu village when the mishap occurred.
The State Commissioner for Finance, Muhammadu Shagari, has visited the families of the deceased to offer his condolences. Describing the incident as tragic and unfortunate, he urged residents to prioritize safety when traveling by water.
The commissioner also cautioned against overloading and negligence by canoe operators, and emphasized the importance of using lifejackets during water travel.
