Delta State governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his deputy, and the entire state cabinet have dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The switch was announced at a news conference in Asaba on Wednesday, according to Channels Television.
It comes just days after another PDP governor, Akwa Ibom’s Umo Eno, publicly backed President Bola Tinubu for a second term, although Eno has not formally joined the APC.
Oborevwori’s move is a major setback for the PDP: Delta has been a PDP stronghold since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. His immediate predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa—Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the 2023 presidential race—is also reportedly poised to defect.
More details to follow.
