Lutheran Archbishop Condemns Benue Massacres, Demands Urgent Security Response

The Archbishop of the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN), Most Reverend Musa Panti Filibus, has strongly condemned the ongoing wave of violence in Benue State, describing the recent mass killings as “barbaric, inhumane, and a betrayal of national responsibility.”

In a statement signed by the Archbishop, he expressed deep sorrow over the recent attacks in Guma Local Government Area, where armed assailants—suspected to be herdsmen—unleashed terror on the communities of Yelwata and Daudu. The assaults claimed over 100 lives, with some reports suggesting the death toll could exceed 200, including women, children, and security personnel.

“These communities were not only attacked, but burned, devastated, and left in mourning,” the Archbishop lamented. “Entire families were wiped out, livelihoods destroyed, and innocent citizens slaughtered in cold blood.”

On behalf of the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria, Archbishop Filibus extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, the affected communities, and the entire people of Benue State. He offered prayers for divine comfort, healing, and peace amid the deep losses.

He described the atrocities as “not just an attack on Benue, but a stain on Nigeria’s conscience,” warning that the continued impunity surrounding such killings undermines both the moral and constitutional obligations of those in power.

“For over a decade, communities across the country have cried out for justice while the blood of innocent Nigerians continues to be spilled,” he said. “The Nigerian government must go beyond words and show through deliberate and sustained action that the lives of its citizens matter.”

Archbishop Filibus reaffirmed the LCCN’s solidarity with the people of Yelwata, Daudu, and all communities across Nigeria suffering from violent attacks. He called for national unity in pursuit of justice, urging leaders to uphold their sacred duty to protect every Nigerian.

He concluded his message with a call rooted in scripture, quoting Amos 5:24:

“But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream.”
