Muhammad Babangida, a prominent Nigerian businessman and respected figure in public service circles, has formally declined his recent appointment as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture.

In a letter addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Babangida expressed deep gratitude for the trust reposed in him, describing the appointment as an honour and a privilege.

“I wish to express my sincere gratitude for the honour of being considered and appointed as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture. It is a true privilege to be thought worthy of such a strategic role in advancing the nation’s agricultural and economic development,” he wrote.

However, Babangida disclosed that after extensive reflection and consultations, he has chosen to step back from the role, citing a combination of personal and professional reasons.

“After careful reflection and consultation, I have decided, with utmost respect, to decline the appointment. This decision was not made lightly. It stems from a convergence of personal and professional considerations which, at this time, would not allow me to serve with the level of focus and commitment the position rightly demands,” the letter read.

Despite declining the role, Muhammad Babangida reaffirmed his full support for President Tinubu’s administration and its developmental agenda.

“Your Excellency, I remain fully committed to the vision of a prosperous and self-sufficient Nigeria under your leadership. I continue to hold your administration in the highest regard and stand ready to support national development in other ways where my expertise may be of service,” he added.

The Bank of Agriculture is a pivotal institution in the federal government’s strategy to boost food security, empower rural farmers, and strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural value chain. The position of Board Chairman is considered critical in steering the bank’s strategic direction.

As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency has yet to announce a replacement for the position.
