National Assembly Extends Recess Amid Security, Governance Challenges

The National Assembly has extended its recess by one week, with plenary sessions now scheduled to resume on 6 May instead of the earlier date of 29 April.

Both the Senate and House of Representatives embarked on a combined Easter and Eid-el-Fitr break on 27 March. In a statement on Monday, the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, announced the extension.

“I am directed to inform Distinguished Senators, Honourable Members, and the general public that the resumption of plenary has been moved from Tuesday, 29th April 2025, to Tuesday, 6th May 2025,” he said.

Ogunlana explained that the extension would allow lawmakers to participate in Workers’ Day events and attend to other constituency matters. He apologised for any inconvenience caused and urged the public to take note of the new date.

Mounting Inactivity Amid National Crises

The extension comes amid growing concerns over worsening insecurity and political unrest across the country. Since the start of the 2025 legislative year on 4 February, the National Assembly has convened just 24 plenary sessions—far below the typical three sessions per week.

The extended recess has further delayed legislative action on several pressing issues, including:

Renewed Boko Haram attacks in Borno State

Ongoing killings in Benue and Plateau States

The proliferation of fraudulent financial schemes, with growing calls for a regulatory task force

The unresolved recall process of suspended Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan

Lack of legislative oversight in the ongoing emergency administration in Rivers State under Ibok-Ete Ibas

Speculation of Internal Power Struggles

While the official explanation cites constituency activities, some insiders suggest the extension may be politically motivated. Reports indicate discontent within the Senate, with some lawmakers allegedly accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of adopting a high-handed leadership style.

As the country grapples with mounting challenges, the continued legislative silence raises questions about the National Assembly’s responsiveness and internal cohesion.
