The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has confirmed that corps members who recently completed their service will receive arrears of the N77,000 monthly allowance.
Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, NYSC Director-General, gave the assurance on Thursday during the Batch A 2025 pre-mobilisation workshop held in Abuja for heads of corps-producing institutions and key stakeholders.
The government began paying the new allowance last month—eight months after President Bola Tinubu signed the new minimum wage bill into law.
Speaking to reporters, Nafiu said:
“The government remains committed to its promise. Once funds are released, we will pay all outstanding arrears. Even those who just passed out will benefit. We already have their bank details and will credit them accordingly.”
He urged Nigerians to remain confident, stating, “The government is both responsible and responsive to the needs of its people.”
Also speaking at the event, Director of Corps Mobilisation, Mohammed Abubakar, highlighted persistent challenges, particularly the fraudulent uploading of unqualified graduates by some tertiary institutions.
“Though we’ve made progress through innovation and collaboration, the issue of dishonest enrolment remains a concern. As we prepare for the next mobilisation, we must be vigilant and proactive,” he said.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, called for reforms to align the NYSC with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the current administration.
“Since its inception in 1973, the NYSC has served a purpose. But times have changed, and the scheme must evolve to prepare graduates for today’s job market. Reforming it is a shared responsibility,” he stated.
Similarly, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike—represented by Abdullahi Suleiman, Mandate Secretary for Youth and Sports—reaffirmed the FCT administration’s support for the NYSC throughout the service year.
