Senator Abbo Urges Calm, Labels Umar Bello Jada Case a ‘Family Dispute’

Senator Ishaku Abbo has called for peace in the ongoing legal case involving popular political figure Umar Bello Jada, known as “Calculate,” describing the matter as a “family misunderstanding” rather than a political confrontation.

Speaking after a court session on Monday, Senator Abbo emphasized that the charges leading to Calculate’s recent arrest are bailable and that an earlier decision to remand him in custody had been overturned.

“The magistrate who issued the initial ruling has been overruled,” Abbo said. “Lawyers are now taking the necessary legal steps, and the case has been moved away from that magistrate’s court.”

The senator sought to dispel any perception that the case was politically motivated.

“This is not a political war; it is a family issue,” he stressed. “Calculate and Alhaji Sadiq Wali have shared a father-son relationship for many years. What happened was unfortunate, but we must prioritize peace.”

Abbo also admitted that his initial comments—made during a live interview—had been based on incomplete information.

“When I spoke during the interview, I did so without knowing the full details. After reviewing reports from GG News and others, I conducted my own inquiry and found there were aspects I had missed,” he said.

The senator confirmed that he has since met with both parties, including Calculate and the children of Alhaji Sadiq Wali, in an effort to facilitate reconciliation.

“Nigeria faces enough challenges—poverty, hunger, disease. We should not add to them through internal strife. I believe that by the next court hearing on June 24, progress toward a peaceful resolution will be made.”

He also commended the judiciary for its impartial handling of the case.

“Judicial officers must uphold the law without bias. What we witnessed today is a victory for democracy and the rule of law.”

Following the court session, members of Calculate’s legal team criticized the manner of his arrest.

“He was taken from the airport as if he were a criminal. No statements were taken, and no proper service of process occurred. He was remanded without due process,” one lawyer said.

The legal team has filed a motion for judicial review, arguing that the arrest and remand violated proper legal procedures.

The case stems from a petition related to an alleged defamatory audio recording involving Alhaji Sadiq Wali. The controversy has stirred political tensions across Adamawa State.

However, with Senator Abbo’s conciliatory tone and behind-the-scenes mediation, there is growing hope that the matter may be resolved amicably.

As the next court date approaches, the key question remains: will peace prevail, or will legal and political tensions deepen? For now, Yola’s courtrooms—and private negotiation rooms—remain at the center of public attention.
