The Adamawa Advocates for Women Inclusion (AAWI) has called for the immediate swearing-in of Mrs. Peace Samson Audu, the Vice Chairperson of Fufore Local Government Area, following the death of Chairman Hon. Shuaibu Babas on April 23.
In a press release issued Tuesday, the group expressed deep concern over what it described as an “unjustifiable delay” in transitioning leadership, stressing that the Adamawa State Local Government Law and the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended) clearly mandate the vice chairperson to assume office in the event of a vacancy.
“The law is unambiguous,” AAWI stated. “Mrs. Audu should be sworn in as acting or substantive chairperson without further delay.”
The group also raised alarm over alleged reports suggesting that the delay may be driven by gender and religious bias. “If true, this would be not only unconstitutional but a direct violation of the principles of inclusion and equality,” the statement said.
AAWI extended condolences to the family of the late chairman and the people of Fufore, while emphasizing the need for adherence to democratic norms during the transition period.
The organization called on the Adamawa State Government and relevant authorities to act immediately in accordance with the law. It also urged civil society and the media to amplify calls for justice and warned political actors against marginalizing women in leadership roles.
“Nigeria’s democracy must work for everyone — regardless of gender or creed,” AAWI concluded. “The time to act is now.”
