The Delta State College of Nursing Sciences has issued a disciplinary query to a student, Osato Edobor, for allegedly recording and posting an unauthorized video on social media during Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s visit to Delta State.
A letter addressed to Edobor, signed by the institution’s provost, Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne, and dated March 27, 2025, was shared online by journalist Oseni Rufai via X. The letter accused Edobor of engaging in a “malicious act” by recording herself singing and posting an “unofficial response” to a song during the First Lady’s arrival at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba.
The visit was part of the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme, which saw 10,000 professional kits distributed to midwives in the South-South region.
Citing the Student Handbook, the college stated that Edobor’s actions violated disciplinary regulations and ordered her to submit a written explanation within 24 hours, justifying why she should not face sanctions.
The disciplinary action follows a viral video showing nursing students at the event seemingly rejecting the First Lady as their “mother.” The incident occurred when the Master of Ceremony introduced Oluremi Tinubu with the customary title, but the students responded, “Na your mama be this,” meaning “She is your mother,” implying they did not accept the designation.
The video has since sparked widespread reactions, with many interpreting the students’ response as a reflection of growing discontent over economic hardship and insecurity under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
