The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed shock and sadness over the death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a young broadcast journalist with ARISE News Channel, who was killed during an armed robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, on Monday, September 29, 2025.

Maduagwu, popularly known as Sommie, was 29 years old. She worked as a news anchor, reporter, and producer, and was also a qualified lawyer. The NUJ described her as a brilliant, passionate, and dedicated professional who brought intellect, warmth, and integrity to her craft.

In a condolence message signed by its National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the union said her death was not only a devastating loss to her family and colleagues at ARISE News, but also to journalism and Nigeria as a whole.

“The NUJ condemns this heinous act and calls on the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice. Nigerians deserve to live and work in safety, and government must prioritise the security of lives and property as a matter of urgent responsibility,” the statement read.

The union extended heartfelt condolences to Maduagwu’s parents, siblings, extended family, colleagues, and friends, praying for strength to bear the loss and for her soul to rest in peace.
