Shettima Declares Fintiri APC Leader in Adamawa Amid Party Tensions

Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has officially declared Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri as the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State, marking a major political shift with implications for the state’s power dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The declaration was made during a grand reception organized to formally welcome Governor Fintiri into the APC, an event that drew party stakeholders, political allies, and supporters from across the state. The development signals a significant realignment in Adamawa politics, as Fintiri, a sitting governor elected under a different platform, now assumes a central leadership role within the ruling party.

Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the event, Vice President Shettima described Fintiri’s defection as a strategic move that strengthens the APC’s chances in future elections. According to him, the governor’s entry into the party brings “stability, structure, and renewed political energy” needed to consolidate APC’s presence in Adamawa.

Shettima emphasized that the move goes beyond mere political alignment, noting that it represents a broader effort to unify key actors and reposition the party for electoral success in 2027. He expressed confidence that with Fintiri’s influence and political structure, the APC would be better placed to compete and win decisively in the state.

In his response, Governor Fintiri pledged to harmonise party structures across Adamawa State, assuring members that his leadership would be inclusive and focused on collective success. He stressed the need for unity among party faithful, promising to work with both new entrants and long-standing members to build a formidable front ahead of upcoming elections.

“I am committed to bringing everyone together under one umbrella. Our goal is clear—to strengthen the party and deliver victory at all levels,” Fintiri stated.

However, the development has not come without controversy. The declaration of Fintiri as the APC leader in Adamawa has sparked concerns among some long-standing party members, who fear that the sudden shift in leadership could sideline loyalists who have built the party over the years.

Political observers say such tensions are not uncommon in situations involving high-profile defections, especially when new entrants are immediately elevated to leadership positions. Analysts warn that how the party manages internal grievances in the coming months will be critical to maintaining cohesion and avoiding factional disputes.

For many within the APC, the challenge now lies in balancing the influence of established members with the political weight brought in by Fintiri and his supporters. Failure to achieve this balance could deepen divisions and weaken the party’s overall strength in the state.

As Adamawa’s political landscape continues to evolve, all eyes will be on how the APC navigates this transition. While Fintiri’s emergence as leader may boost the party’s electoral prospects, the need for internal unity and strategic coordination remains paramount.

With the 2027 elections on the horizon, the coming months are expected to test the resilience, adaptability, and cohesion of the APC in Adamawa State.
