APC Congress: Shuaibu Emerges North-East Zonal Chairman as Party Repositions for 2027

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken a significant step toward consolidating its political structure in the North-East, with Barrister Idris Shuaibu emerging as the party’s new Zonal Chairman. The decision was reached during the APC North-East Zonal Congress held on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at the Gombe International Conference Centre.

The congress brought together key political actors, party leaders, and delegates from across the six states of the North-East region. It served as a strategic gathering aimed at reinforcing party unity, strengthening internal democratic processes, and laying a solid foundation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Among the high-profile attendees were Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, Governor Mai Mala Buni, Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, and Governor Agbu Kefas. Also present was the Minister of Transportation, Saidu Ahmed Alkali, alongside party officials, elders, and grassroots delegates.

In a move that underscored party consensus and cohesion, delegates adopted a unified list of candidates for zonal executive positions. Barrister Shuaibu was elected as Zonal Chairman, while Hon. Baba Ali emerged as Zonal Secretary, alongside other members of the zonal executive committee.

The adoption of the consensus list followed formal motions moved by prominent party figures. Former Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, moved the motion for adoption, which was seconded by Hon. Usman Bello Kumo. A similar motion reinforcing the process was also moved by Senator Ali Ndume and seconded by Hon. Muhammad Shehu ‘Dantata’, leading to its unanimous ratification by delegates.

Speaking after his emergence, Barrister Shuaibu described the congress as peaceful, successful, and reflective of the party’s commitment to unity. He emphasized the need for members to remain focused and work collectively to strengthen the APC’s presence at the grassroots level.

He further called on party stakeholders to sustain the spirit of cooperation demonstrated during the congress, noting that unity remains the party’s strongest asset as it prepares for future electoral contests, particularly the 2027 general elections.

Political observers see the outcome of the congress as a strategic effort by the APC to solidify its influence in the North-East, a region that has historically played a crucial role in Nigeria’s electoral landscape. With new leadership now in place, expectations are high that the party will intensify mobilization efforts, reconcile internal differences, and expand its support base across the region.
