A fire incident at the Palluja Market shopping complex opposite the main market in Yola has destroyed approximately ten shops and property worth millions of naira. The fire, which began Wednesday night, reignited in the early hours of Thursday morning, causing further devastation.
According to Yusuf Jabatawa, a vendor in the market, the initial fire broke out in one shop within the two-story complex and was reportedly contained later that night. However, the blaze resumed around 3:00 AM Thursday morning, spreading rapidly and engulfing nearly all shops on the top floor.
While no lives were lost in the incident, the financial losses are significant. The scale of the damage is still being assessed, but traders are reporting the loss of goods and equipment worth hundreds of millions of naira.
Firefighters battled the flames for several hours before finally extinguishing the fire Thursday morning. The scene is now calm, and the Nigeria Police have cordoned off the affected building, preventing access as investigations into the cause of the fire begin. Authorities are yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. Traders affected by the fire are left counting their losses and appealing for assistance.
