The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Adamawa State Chapter, has condemned the renewed outbreak of communal violence between the Bachama and Chobo communities in Lamurde Local Government Area.

The clash, which led to the burning of houses and destruction of food items, also resulted in the loss of lives—an outcome CAN described as “deeply saddening” and “most disheartening.”

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Rev. Dr. Joel Danjuma Manzo, CAN expressed regret that the fresh attacks have undone years of peacebuilding efforts facilitated by the state government, religious bodies, and other well-meaning organizations. The association noted that the two communities had long coexisted peacefully, with intermarriages symbolizing their longstanding unity.

With government imposing a 24-hour curfew to restore order, CAN appealed to both sides to remain calm and immediately cease hostilities to allow room for dialogue and peaceful resolution.

The Christian body called for restraint, urging the communities to allow wisdom to prevail as authorities work toward restoring lasting peace and mutual understanding. CAN further appealed for security personnel to be maintained in the area to safeguard lives and property.

In its message of solidarity, CAN sympathized with families who lost loved ones in the crisis, describing the as “one too many” during such a critical time. The group also called for a thorough investigation into the incident to ensure justice and prevent future occurrences.

CAN encouraged well-meaning individuals, organizations, and the general public to support victims of the crisis, stressing the importance of unity and sustained peace efforts to protect vulnerable groups, especially women and children.

The statement concluded with prayers for comfort for the bereaved families and hope for swift restoration of peace in Lamurde and the entire state.
