As Nigeria joins the global community to mark Safe Motherhood Day 2025 under the theme “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,” The Challenge Initiative (TCI) is emerging as a key driver in translating family planning commitments into tangible, life-saving results.
Through strategic partnerships with over a dozen state governments, TCI is at the forefront of a quiet revolution — one that is improving access to family planning and childbirth spacing services and making measurable strides in maternal and child health outcomes.
“Safe motherhood doesn’t start in the delivery room — it begins with access to informed choices and the right reproductive health services,” said Dr. Taiwo Johnson, TCI Nigeria Country Team Lead. “TCI is proving that when local governments are empowered, real change happens — communities are reached, lives are saved, and futures are secured.”
Launched in 2017, TCI builds on the gains of the Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI), transitioning into a platform that equips states to scale up what works. From urban centers to underserved rural areas, TCI’s approach focuses on local ownership, youth engagement, male involvement, and targeted outreach to underserved populations.
Across Nigeria, this model is delivering results: health facilities are gaining trust, states are mobilizing resources, and family planning is being integrated with maternal health services, even in complex humanitarian settings.
On this Safe Motherhood Day, TCI stands as a testament to what’s possible when commitments are backed by action — leading a national movement toward healthier mothers, stronger families, and a more hopeful future.
