Over 3 Million Nigerians Displaced Amid Ongoing Humanitarian Crisis in Benue and Plateau States

More than three million Nigerians have been displaced due to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Benue and Plateau States, according to the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Yusuf Sununu.

Dr. Sununu made this disclosure on Thursday during an appearance on “The Morning Brief”, a news program aired on Channels Television.

The Minister highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to provide relief materials and improve the living conditions of internally displaced persons (IDPs), while calling for increased support from international partners and civil society organizations.

The crisis has been fueled by a wave of violent attacks carried out by unidentified gunmen, resulting in the deaths of dozens and the displacement of thousands more. Entire communities have been ravaged—homes burned, farmlands destroyed, and residents forced to flee in search of safety. Most of the attacks reportedly occurred at night, catching many villagers unprepared.

These recurring assaults have intensified concerns about the region’s fragile security situation and long-standing ethnic tensions, particularly between farming and herding communities.
