The Catholic Diocese of Yola, in partnership with the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), has distributed essential relief items to 339 households affected by recent communal conflicts in Adamawa State.
The intervention targeted families in Lafiya and Gyawana communities in Lamurde LGA, providing vital support through a joint conflict-response project by the Diocese and MCC.
Relief materials were shared at St. Paul’s Parish, Lafiya, and St. Michael’s Parish, Gyawana, aiming to ease the hardship caused by clashes between the Chobo and Bachama communities.
Most Rev. Dr Stephen Dami Mamza commended MCC for its steadfast commitment to supporting conflict victims in Adamawa. He noted that their long-standing partnership through the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) has transformed countless lives across the state.
“Our partnership with MCC has supported victims of both conflict and natural disasters. Today, 339 households are beneficiaries of this collaboration,” Bishop Mamza stated.
The Bishop urged residents to embrace unity, forgiveness, and peaceful coexistence, stressing that violence only deepens suffering.
MCC representative Danjuma Mailambu explained that the intervention was prompted by the recent communal crisis in Lafiya. He encouraged the community to rise above tribal and religious differences and rebuild trust.
Beneficiaries, including Fyemty Joram and Kizito Innocent, expressed profound gratitude for the timely support, acknowledging the consistent humanitarian role of both organisations over the years.
Items distributed included: beans, maize, cooking oil, mats, soap, bedsheets, detergent, Izal, sanitary pads, toothpaste, toothbrushes, slippers, and sugar.
