Tension is mounting in Gereng District of Girei Local Government Area, Adamawa State, following allegations of political interference in traditional leadership structures by the council chairman, Adamu Umar Dallatu.
The concerns were raised during a press conference held on Tuesday at Tannel Resort and Hotel, where the Njiya-Goron Development Association (NGDA) accused the chairman of overstepping his authority and disrupting long-standing traditional governance systems.
Leaders of the association described the situation as a grave threat to peace and stability in the district, alleging that the chairman has undermined the authority of traditional rulers, particularly in the appointment of Ward Heads, locally known as Jauros. According to them, such appointments remain the exclusive responsibility of traditional institutions.
They maintained that the actions are not only unconstitutional but also capable of triggering crisis and insecurity within the community.
The association recalled that before the creation of Gereng District in 2024 by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, the Njiya-Goron community had enjoyed peace and order under its traditional leadership system. They noted that successive administrations—from the period under Song Local Government Area to the establishment of Girei Local Government Area in 1996—respected these traditions.
However, the group alleged that the current administration has departed from this precedent.
Central to the dispute is the alleged attempt by the chairman to reinstate certain Ward Heads who were earlier removed following community petitions over alleged land-related offenses, including illegal sales and unauthorized leasing of community land. Their removal, the association said, had the approval of relevant traditional authorities.
Despite this, the chairman is accused of attempting to force their reinstatement, a move that reportedly led to a breakdown of law and order on March 13, 2026.
The situation has further escalated with the reported suspension of Acting District Head, Pst. Rodani Kaigama, who was said to have opposed the reinstatement of the affected Ward Heads. The association also alleged that the current Acting District Head, Mr. Milson Shafakaro, is facing pressure to comply with similar directives.
The NGDA called for an independent investigation into the matter and urged authorities to take necessary action. It also appealed to the chairman to focus on developmental responsibilities rather than interfering in traditional affairs.
Security agencies were urged to closely monitor the situation and hold accountable any individual responsible for a breakdown of peace in the community.
Amid the growing tension, the association called on residents of Njiya-Goron to remain calm, united, and law-abiding, reaffirming their commitment to peace, justice, and the protection of their traditional institutions through lawful means.
