The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved a tariff adjustment for telecommunications operators, including MTN and Airtel, in response to rising operational costs.
The decision, announced in a statement by NCC Director of Public Affairs Reuben Muoka, follows a review of industry conditions and operator requests. While some operators sought significant increases, the NCC approved a maximum adjustment of 50%, aligning with the 2013 NCC Cost Study.
“This adjustment is necessary to bridge the gap between operational costs and current tariffs, which have remained largely static since 2013,” the statement explained. “It will enable operators to continue investing in infrastructure and innovation, leading to improved network quality, enhanced customer service, and greater coverage for consumers.”
The NCC emphasized that the adjustments will be implemented gradually and transparently, with operators required to inform customers about the new rates and demonstrate improvements in service delivery.
The regulator acknowledged the concerns of consumers regarding the impact of tariff increases. “The NCC has carefully considered the needs of both consumers and the telecommunications industry, aiming to strike a balance that protects consumers while ensuring the sustainability of the sector,” Muoka said.
The NCC will continue to monitor the impact of the tariff adjustments and engage with stakeholders to ensure a healthy and competitive telecommunications market that benefits both consumers and operators.
