The Adamawa State Government, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, has commenced a decongestion exercise along the Ngurore–Numan Road and the Mayo-Belwa Highway to restore free flow of traffic and improve safety for road users.
The operation targets motorists, traders, and other individuals whose activities have been obstructing vehicular movement along the busy corridor. The initiative is part of broader efforts by the state government to address traffic congestion, reduce road accidents, and enhance urban order across key highways in Adamawa State.
Speaking on the exercise, the Chairman of Yola South Local Government Area, Mr. Salihu Usman Malkohi, explained that the intervention is aimed at restoring sanity on the heavily used road, which serves as a major link between communities and commercial centres.
According to him, the persistent obstruction of the highway by roadside trading and indiscriminate parking has contributed significantly to traffic gridlock and frequent accidents in the area.
Mr. Malkohi stressed that the decongestion exercise would not be a one-off operation but a continuous process. He urged residents, traders, and commuters to cooperate with authorities and support the rural and urban renewal agenda of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s administration.He further disclosed that the government has proposed an alternative site measuring approximately 4.5 hectares to serve as a grains market and motor park. The move, he said, is intended to provide a structured and safer space for commercial activities without disrupting traffic
Some traders at the Ngurore market have commended the initiative, which according to them, will benefit traders, motorists, and commuters alike by creating a safer and more organized trading environment.
Also speaking, the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of operations, ACP Ibrahim Kambra, said the operation became necessary due to the level of lawlessness around the Ngurore market, which had severely disrupted vehicular movement.
ACP Kambra revealed that adequate mechanisms have been put in place to ensure the sustainability of the exercise, adding that significant compliance and positive results had already been recorded since the commencement of the operation.
He urged residents of the area to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies, emphasizing that maintaining order on public roads is a collective responsibility.
