n a landmark achievement marking its 35th anniversary, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) commissioned its first-ever barracks on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, in Yola, Adamawa State. The facility, a significant investment in the agency’s personnel, includes modern administrative offices, detention facilities, secure storage, and residential accommodations.
The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, presided over the commissioning ceremony. He emphasized the importance of the barracks as a testament to the President Bola Tinubu administration’s commitment to the welfare of NDLEA officers and their families. Fagbemi stressed that the investment in their well-being is a call to higher responsibility and unwavering dedication to the fight against drug abuse.
“The fight against drug abuse is a fight for our nation’s future,” Fagbemi stated. “This barracks, therefore, is more than a place of residence; it is a fortress of resilience and a beacon of hope for our nation’s future.” He pledged continued support for the NDLEA and urged officers to remain steadfast in their service.
NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), highlighted the significance of the barracks in addressing the security challenges faced by personnel over the years. He recounted instances of officers being targeted in their homes, underscoring the urgent need for secure housing. Marwa expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his support and belief in the NDLEA’s mandate.
The Yola Barracks, situated on an 18-hectare site in Kwanan Waya, comprises a modern administrative building, detention facility, state-of-the-art exhibit room, watchtowers, operational pavilions, and residential quarters for officers and commanders. Marwa described the facility as a symbol of the agency’s commitment to the welfare of its personnel and its determination to build a safer Nigeria.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State commended the collaborative efforts that brought the project to fruition, emphasizing its importance in safeguarding the nation and its youth from the dangers of illicit drugs.
National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, reiterated the federal government’s commitment to providing a conducive environment for security agencies. He praised the NDLEA’s efforts in combating drug trafficking and abuse and urged personnel to continue demonstrating courage and professionalism.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by numerous dignitaries, including former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, members of the National Assembly, traditional rulers, and representatives from various committees related to drug control. The event underscored the collective commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria.
